Two malls.
SPEAKER_00Zero chill. And a serious case of California withdrawal. What? I just want everyone to know that it takes us a few times to get that right. Every time.
SPEAKER_01We still can't like every time we start, I'm like, okay, what do we say? We need to do outtakes for sure. We do, because we our brains don't always function like this early. They never function. I think mine doesn't always. All through the day, mine does not.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. Okay, first of all, yes. Shout out to our listeners. Oh my gosh, you guys. I can't even believe it. Like, I'm so thankful.
SPEAKER_01This is crazy. So we opened, I mean, we can see, you know, stats. We are in four countries. We've done five shows. Yeah. This is our fin. Yeah, this is our fin. This is our fin. So we're in five countries. We're in all cities, you know, a ton of cities if you ask the US. But like how? How'd you find us? And thank you for finding listening. Find us on Instagram too. Make sure that you like our stuff and you're engaged on Instagram, and I'll be posting questions because we'd like to hear from you guys on how we are doing. Shout out to you know, Ashburn, Virginia, San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, Minneapolis, Katie, Dayton, Los Angeles. Oh my gosh. Um, where are we? Vietnam, Perth, Australia. It's it's a lot. I can't name everything, but thank you guys for this. Seriously.
SPEAKER_00It's pretty cool. Like Casey keeps saying, are we really that interesting? I was like, I think so. But you know, that's just me. Oh my god. It's hilarious. What's cool though is like the feedback from the people that we do know, right? That have like we've sent it to and been like, hey, just you know, I always tell like my parents and stuff, I'm like, even if you put it on mute, like just let it play. My dad started laughing at her when I said that. I was like, because I know you're busy, but just let it play.
SPEAKER_01But they like it. The feedback is the great like everybody listens and they're like, oh my gosh, this is good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's funny. Yeah. And and like we've gotten feedback, like it feels like I'm sitting there with you guys, like just chatting, which is cool, because that's cool. That's what we want, right?
SPEAKER_01Well, I think too, like part of like I think what you and I really wanted to do is like we're experts in like nothing, right? So we're just regular people like everybody else. Yeah. And so it's just interesting to have like our perspective and then other people's perspective, and just to kind of get because like like we have always said, like, we are just trying to figure out life.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And we have no idea how how it looks like and I think that's why it's relatable because I think everyone's trying to figure out life. Exactly. Like, I don't know what I'm doing. No. I like to pretend that I do.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, and I still at 47 excuse me, years old. I always say, like, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Like literally, I have, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I tell my kids that all the time when they're like super hard on themselves about schoolwork or, you know, like fitting in with this group of people or whatever. I'm like, I have changed courses a thousand times. I'm gonna be 40 this year. I've changed courses four million times. Like that's just you know, that's life, and that's okay, right? Yeah, for sure. Segway into why are we actually here? Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, how didn't we begin here? Yeah, speaking of I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Yeah, I guess a podcaster was not in my bingo card. I wasn't famous.
SPEAKER_00I always wanted to be famous. Me too, when I was younger. Why? I don't know. It just looked glamorous. Now I don't really mind if I'm famous. Okay. I just want to make money. So I okay.
SPEAKER_01So I always wanted to be on Kids Incorporated. Oh my god, yes. Best show ever. Love. I always wanted that was like my show. I always wanted to be on that show. And then I was. Just as the audience. This is the audience though. But they used to go to Notesbury Farm in Southern California. Everybody knows it's in Buena Park. Yeah. And they used to perform. So like we'd always meet them and all this kind of stuff. And then one day, like as you know, you get older, and I I would it was weird because I would run into like random kids ink people at like Disneyland. Like one day I ran at Sh Devon Pruitt was her is her name. Uh-huh. And I ran into her Disneyland. She's like, Oh, have you ever wanna code? I've run into like Jennifer Love Hewitt before. Like just really weird, right? And then of course, you know, like the old schools.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So one day, my friend is in TJ partying. Do you want to say joke? She's partying in Mexico. Those not from Southern California. Yeah. She's in like I actually I say TJ, I think actually she's running. And um, she runs into Stacy, which everybody knows is Fergie, right? Really? Yeah. And she's like, oh my gosh, like you know, like I pretty much grew up with you. Like 400 times. So we like all go together.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And um you start to feel like you know these people even though you don't. Oh totally. Like, yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01And she was so like chill, and she's like, Oh, well, why don't you you know, I'm back home. Because they lived in I can't remember which city, a diamond bar or something. And I was going to Cal State Floorton at the time with my friend. And um she's like, Yeah, you guys were having a Super Bowl party if you guys want to come. And so we went. That's yeah. So it was like uh this is when she was in Wild Orchid, so it was like me, my friend Noelle, and then like Fergie and Stephanie from Wild Orchid, she had a boyfriend back then, she had a Mustang, and she sings about her Mustang in her song. Yeah. And it was like, it was cool. Like, so we partied with Fergie for you know a hot minute, and that's that was fun. I know.
SPEAKER_00Stuff like that's a trip when you think about it, like because at the time you were probably excited and like, oh, this is so cool, but now looking back, you're like, oh, I like really like partied with them and totally.
SPEAKER_01Well, and it it's really funny because well at the time she wasn't Fergie, like whatever. It was really fun. And then, like, I don't know, a couple years after that, I don't know how many, um, I went to Justin Timberlake concert in LA. I think it was at Staples, and the opening act, yeah, it's like the opening, like, I don't know, my friend Alexis and I, we went another Alexis, uh and she we were like hungry and like we just didn't make the opening act and we kind of just brushed it off, like oh man, we would have loved to see it. Obviously, you're there. But um But that's not why you were going to be able to do it. Right, right. So we just kind of like okay, whatever. And it ended up being the peas, black-eyed peas, opened up for Justin Temperlake. So I'm I'm so bummed that I missed that. Yeah, and then of course they blew up and it was whatever. Right. You know, and now I just I wonder if she remembers you. Not a chance in hell. Not a chance in hell. And I have pictures of literally of us growing up. I must like every year, every age, like pictures of me and Stacey, me and Rashawn Patterson, me and Martica, you know, whatever. Yeah. Growing up, growing up, they don't know who I am.
SPEAKER_00I am I'm just Well, I'm here. Like that stuff's so cool. Yeah, I guess I I like played with him when I was little. I don't know. I don't remember, but yeah. That's so cool. I know, so cool. Stuff like that's like trips me out. No. You don't get that here in the world. We say all that again. That's my pen, people.
SPEAKER_01Um so with well, with that though, why am I here? Because that was such a cooler way of being.
SPEAKER_00Right. I know. Okay, you go. Let's tell everybody. Yeah, let's say. Okay. So we we we titled this podcast like the name of our show is why the fuck are we here? That covers like a multitude of things. Why are we here in Texas? Why are we here in motherhood? Why are we here? Period. Yeah, in life. It's not just why are we in Texas? Because again, for all you Texans, we don't hate it here. Nope. We just we just it's just not home to us. Yeah. And but we have really good family friends. Um, it's my best friend's little brother, whom I watched grow up, and now he's a grown man with a family and his beautiful wife. I've known both of them. I've known her since she was a teenager. I knew him since he was, I think, nine. Wow. So, and now they have kids, and you know, it's cool. Well, before they had children, they moved out here. Okay. From from San Diego, also. And we were like, hey, it's spring break. Let's take the kids and go check it out. Because they really liked it. And so we were like, cool. So we made the trip, we drove out. Oh wow. Um, and we drove straight through. That was crazy. Yeah, 23 hours. Yeah. So we got here, we, you know, their home was beautiful. The the city they live in is beautiful. We like went and did a bunch of stuff, and we came in springtime. So if anyone knows, it's pretty Texas in springtime is like my fave. It's pretty. The weather's beautiful. It feels like home. It does. It's like right. So I think it's like 70s. It was like a facade. We were tricky. But to be fair, they told us this isn't normal. Like, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but when other people are like, it's get it gets hot. Yes. You're like, okay, yes. It gets California hot.
SPEAKER_00No ma'am, it's Texas hot. The humidity here is unreal. Yeah. But so we really liked it, and we actually looked at houses while we were out here and but at that time it just wasn't in our cards, right? Right. So we were like, okay, cool, no big deal. Um, we'll flash forward uh two years and then COVID hit, yeah, and then we had the opportunity to buy, but we couldn't afford it in California to buy, right? And we were content. Like we had a cute house, we were fine, right? Yes, it was a little small, but we were making it. We were hardly ever home anyway. So, right? You're never spent a lot of time. Yeah. So we were like, okay, let's do it. Was this big old thing with my family? I mean, my parents are super involved with my kids, so I kind of like took them away from them. So I I still feel bad about that. Um, but we're here and people have asked us, well, why don't you just go back? Yeah, if it's so great they're good, just go back. Well, one, it's not that simple to pack up a whole family and go. Right. Two, my kids are older now, so they're involved. They're friends. They have friends. They have school's good, like they have a life now. Yes, and and so that's on me. Yeah. And I'm not gonna say my husband because he was like, Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure? You want to leave your family? Because I'm very close with my family.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, Yeah, it'll be great.
SPEAKER_00Spent the first two years crying. Yes, you know. Um, and again, it's not it, I I don't people ask me all the time, oh, do you love it? You know, when I tell them we moved. No, I don't love it, right? But I don't hate it. And and I think that's important. Like, I love our home. Uh we said this in our first episode. I love our home. I I love we have phenomenal neighbors. We we all look out for each other. We have a great neighborhood. Yes. And I live in the same neighborhood. And it's it's wonderful. We met really good friends. Yes, yes. Really good friends. Yeah, like Casey and I wouldn't have met if we didn't.
SPEAKER_01No, we're from like the same area. Essentially, it like we met here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which is random. Yes, thank God though. So that's why, you know, that's why we're it's not we can't just pick up and I mean everything's expensive, right? Even here it's expensive. So to pick up and leave, yes, I I tell my husband daily, I will live in a shoe box or out of my car just to go back home because I miss my family. If we do go back home, we would live in a shoe box. And I'd be okay with that. Yeah. You know? So it's but that's why that's why we're here. And and again, like, have we thought about going back? And yeah, we put our house on the market for like two days a couple years ago, and then we were like, okay, let's not, you know. So, you know, it's she cannot go without me. And I don't think I can go without her. Like, it's a package deal.
SPEAKER_01You're not allowed. No, we're in it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I will end up in your suitcase. Yeah. Uh, and pop out and be like, where do you think you're going? You don't go without me in the case. Yeah. No, no, not allowed. But yeah, I mean, like, so you know, uh we do get a lot of questions, and then people are like hardcore Texans, are you know, the born here, live here, die here, die here. That's great. I I love that for you, but that's just not me. People ask us, oh, are you do you consider yourself a Texan?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00Very honest. Like, again, yeah, not but there's nothing wrong with being a Texan. There's nothing wrong with being a Californian. Californian that lives in Texas. Yes. I say that's funny. And again, not real protective. I'm not bashing Texas. I just it's just different. And when you haven't gone anywhere else, you don't really understand that. Yeah. And I feel like there's the people who are kind of unkind and like question us, that's those are the ones. Those are the ones that and I'm not trying to offend you. I know this is your home. But people hate on California all the time. They do. And cool.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of a lot. It's kind of a lot over here. But it's it's silly. I don't even pay attention to that. I mean, it's but I mean, my people have said some weird stuff.
SPEAKER_00My point to that though is like, okay, cool, you don't like it. Sorry, you don't like perfect weather and uh like we're great food and like why why do you hate on it so much? Because the politics, that's not just what California is about. Well, it's not, and the politics aren't the people.
SPEAKER_01Right. And the people are not like that. So it's like I don't there's really uh and and truthfully, you might not like the politics of California, but California itself as a state is gorgeous. Yeah. It's you know, it's not perfect.
SPEAKER_00Um but no state is I haven't found one state And like I think there's a mix there's a mix of politics everywhere you go. So why that's always the first thing that people have said to us. Well, like don't when they find out we're from California, yeah, don't bring your politics here. What shut up? What it doesn't matter where I live, I'm gonna talk about what I Well, yeah, you're gonna feel right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah exactly. Everybody I know so many people think that we came um to escape like political asylum, right? And I've always I always laugh. They're like, oh you're lucky to be having us. Be quiet. First of all, that's not at all I want you to laugh. Shut the fuck up. I know. Because that's not it. It's not at all, it has literally nothing to do with politics. Um and I mean it's no secret. I vote Democrat. Yeah, whatever. But I would always vote for the best candidate, and the best candidate's not, yeah, I'm okay with that too. Like it's not, yeah, you know, that's n we we have to be fair, right? Yes, we can't be, you know, yes, stingent, right? You vote for who's best. Yes. And if it's not a Democrat, then then it's on a Democrat. There's done the tone of lousy ones. But yeah, um, overall, you know, California through and through. And we're just a state in the union, just like the other 49. So the the beauty of that is that we can pick up and go and live where we want. Mm-hmm. So what's the big deal, right? It's not I don't know. Yeah I don't know. I can go anywhere I want, but but equally, if you're in Texas or wherever you're from, you can go and be wherever you want you want to believe. And that is what makes us the United States of America. Right.
SPEAKER_00And I think that people lose sight of that with every no, I just wanted to do this, and and it it's been a great experience, like as far as like learning a lot about ourselves, right? Like, okay, we can do hard things. It takes a lot for people to pick up and leave where they can cut balls and see that. It does. It does. So my story.
SPEAKER_01So my story is um it's funny because we um were living in this cute little condo, and you know, one kid and then another kid, and we were sort of, you know, cramped for space and outgrowing it a little bit. So we started putting bids on homes. Yeah. And we would just get outbid like left and right because, you know, we were already, California's expensive. We're at the top of our budget, and then somebody else would come in and offer a dollar more, and like they're the winners, right? Or um what happened to us a couple of times is um one in particular, is it like a foreign investor came in and they and they turned that house around and it was beautiful, and they sold it for like three times, but yeah, we would have bought it for. So that stuff. So we were just kind of like between a rock and a hard place, just hitting wall after wall after wall after wall, and wasn't getting any easier or better. But my cousin who lives here, I have a cousin here, and he's been harassing I always tell people he's been harassing us for like 10 years to get out here. Yeah. And I was like, I'll never leave California. No, like not a chance in hell. Never say never. Never say never, right? And uh he was just harassing and harassing and harassing, and then COVID hit, and then we were, you know, getting out bid, and his wife surveilled her, and I'm you know, we're close to I've her too. And so we would just see these homes and she'd send us homes and we'd look, and it's like, oh, we did that for like a quarter of a fraction of the cost. And it was like, okay. And then it was just, you know, COVID, it was a the end was near. Yeah. And I said to my husband, like, well, I mean, maybe we should just try it, because we can always come home. Right. The kids were younger, and I'm like, let's just go for it for a little bit, and that we'll use it as a rental property or we'll sell it and come back, whatever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he was like in in hindsight, is a lot harder than it sounds. Yeah. Just so if you're thinking about it, just keep that in mind.
SPEAKER_01Keep that in mind, yeah, because we learned the hard way. But, anyways, so um we came we yeah, we bought a house. Sight unseen, my I trusted my cousin and his wife, and um they did a great job, and the house is beautiful, and um we had some friends. Very beautiful. Yeah, I love it. And we had some friends that were here, and they were like, Yes, that's a great neighborhood. Yeah, our neighborhood is pretty great. It is really great. And so that's how we ended up here. But it's funny because my cousin, who lives here, was like, Well, I'll come and and drive because me and the kids flew. My husband rode. Yes, my cousin my cousin drove the other, and I picked him up at LAX, and it was already like basically summer here. Yeah. And I pick him up at LAX and I drive him to the house. At the minute he gets off the plane, he looks at me and he's like, he steps aside, like, looks at the sky. He's like, it is so nice here. I don't know why the hell y'all are moving to Tesla.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, I hate you.
SPEAKER_00You're like, yeah, sorry. Because of you. Yes, yeah. You're the reason.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. It's been um, it's been an experience. It's been a good experience in a lot of ways. I think we've hit a lot of road bumps, but I think it's been a good experience. Glad we came. Yeah. I'm glad we did it.
SPEAKER_00And that was our thing when we before we came. Like, I I wanted us to be in a diverse area. I was not, I I didn't want to be in an area where it was predominantly one race. Like whichever way you slice it, white, black, Asian. Like I just wanted to say a little bit you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sandy, I know in Orth County you're laughing a little bit. I mean, I think getting better. Yeah. Um, it's not getting worse. It's getting better, but it's still not um it's not a lot. Right. That's okay. It's like it's getting better.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I feel like where we are, it definitely is diverse, which I appreciate. And I think I I think there's things that need to be tweaked a little bit and fixed, like within school and you know, things like that. But for the most part, I mean we've had we've had a good experience. We haven't had anything crazy. I but I am homesick every day. Like, there's not a time when I'm like, oh yeah, I'm good. Yeah. Like like I'm okay, but no, I still could go back home. Like if my kids were like, Okay, let's go, I would have us packed.
SPEAKER_01She she wants to go to UCLA. I'm not sure where my son wants to go yet, but she's like, Can I go to UCLA? And her grades are good and blah blah. We'll see what happens. We've got A few years before we get there. But I'm like, yes, you can. We have to move back because of our out of state tuition. You know, I'm like, we should move back now.
SPEAKER_00That's what I tell my oldest. I'm like, he wants to go to SCSU and you know, do football and everything. And I'm like, well, then we should go now. Right. Because he's about to graduate next year. I know. And so let's go now so it's cheaper. Yeah. And you know. Of course. He's in high school. He has an amazing girlfriend and he has a life. Yeah. A life. Oh. Oh. Gosh. My mom told me last night, well, that's your fault, not his. I think I know that. It is.
SPEAKER_01It is. It's so hard. Like my son, he has like all his friends and like and he's doing like um Muay Thai. Yeah. And he's so happy. Yeah. Like he loves it. Yeah. And then my daughter is at like such a good dance studio. Right. It's like unbelievable. Yeah. And like that, honestly, like those things that, you know, those they're keeping us here. Yeah. And the friends that we've made.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And then yes, they're fine. You and I would go and be together and be fine. But we do have friends that we've made that can't go or are or they're they're established here. So they can't go though. Yeah. I know. Let's just take everyone with us. I know. Well, not. We might have to. I'm serious. We're gonna do a compound. I've already said this. Yeah. Like she already found I I have a plan. Like my husband thinks I'm impulsive, and most of the time I am, but I literally have a plan to go back in doubt. Yeah. I doubt. We just have to figure it all out. So I think we're here for a little bit longer. We are. We are for sure. And I again, I think it's a good thing. It's just it's just we gotta make the best of it, number one. And we have to be able to go home and visit. And I think that's important. We're fortunate enough where like our moms can come and visit and yes, they come a lot. That's good. And that's important. Um especially for our kids. I think like our kids just being being able like my parents showed up for every single thing, no matter big or small. Oh, fancy, yeah. That is a challenge for me here. I get emotional about it because like, you know, my all of my kids do sports and you know, awards. My parents never missed anything. And so I mean, I can I record it, I FaceTime them, I you know, so it's like they're there, but we try. Uh yeah. And uh but that that part is probably the heaviest is just that involvement or you know, we were ten minutes from my parents' house, and so just being able to like be like, I just need my mom and popping in there is like you know what it seemed like uh so that's why we're here. That's why we're that's we question the question, the mystery is solved, the question is an answer for sure.
SPEAKER_01And where are you guys and why are you where you are? Yeah. Born and raised, and did you move? Like, I have a lot of questions. Yes, did you take a did you take a leap and like Yeah, did you do what we did? Are you and and are you happy that you did it? Yes. Because there's a lot of people, especially after the pandemic, and like a couple years into it, I'm seeing like on Facebook and all that, they're like, uh we did it, now we're going back. There's a lot of people going back.
SPEAKER_00So I want to know no matter where like from New York to Iowa or whatever. Like they're like, okay, I tried I home is for me or whatever.
SPEAKER_01You know what I want to know too is is um how you're going back. Yep. That's interesting to me. Tell us how tell us how you're going back. How do you afford to go back? Yeah. Like what's the secret? What's the secret? Because we need it. Because I need, yes, I need the secret. How are you doing it? Because we got, let's compile. And like, yeah. Because I don't I don't hate gatekeeping. I hate it when you're like, oh, I bought this sweater, you know, or somebody, somebody has a cute sweater, and you're like, where'd you get it? And they're like, um, I don't know. And you're like, that you do know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, see, and that's weird to me because I've never been that way. Me neither. I'm sure everyone are like, oh, I like that lamp. Okay. Yeah, oh girl, I got it at Hungad's for $25. No way. Yeah, they had like 10 of them go get one.
SPEAKER_01Was it $25? It was not. Okay, because I was gonna go get one. Fuck.
SPEAKER_00But um we like I just had never been that way. I don't care if you have the same shoes as me. I don't care. Who cares? It's so strict. They're not boxy twins right on the San Days. It's so stupid. Oh, I hate gate people. Yeah, I know. That's like one of my biggest pet peeves. Or people that can't like be like, oh yeah, I got this on Amazon. Well, you liked it until I told you it was from Amazon, right? It's just yeah, come on now. Shut the fucked. They're so stupid. Get the fuck out. Get the fuck out of here.
SPEAKER_01Which is what I have to do. My son's getting braces.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, is he excited? He's so excited. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01I was excited at that age to get racing. Yeah. So he's like super sad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all my kids need them and want them, and our oldest is mad because I didn't get them years ago. So sorry, kid. Sorry, kid.
SPEAKER_01It is what it is. All right, get the fuck out of here. Get the fuck out of here. Goodbye, goodbye. Thank you, everyone. Bye.
